2015, even though only 9 days old, will see a first in ‘mobile device’ history. Shopify reports:
“For the first time in history, more people use mobile phones and tablets to visit online stores than computers. Looking at data from over 100,000 online stores, we saw 50.3% of traffic coming from mobile devices and 49.7% from computers.”
That was based on 100,000 sites that Shopify host. In 2015 trends indicate that mobile device viewing will overtake ‘desktop’ use for website viewing.
What does this mean for me and my business in 2015?
Well, it means that you need to make sure your website or online store works really well on mobile devices – otherwise known as ‘Mobile Friendly’. If it isn’t, then it means you may be losing customers who will opt for an easier user experience.
In the past 2 years, having a ‘Mobile Friendly’ website only meant making sure people didn’t have to pinch and zoom to get the information they wanted. It then progressed to designing sites that rearranged the design or ‘responded’ to the device’s screen size. Hence the term ‘responsive design’.
Now, with the statistics in mobile’s favour, (it would seem logical that) we have to consider mobiles first when building or maintaining our websites. Google encourages people to build new websites with two main factors in mind:
- Speed: How quickly will your site load over 3G or 4G reception?
- Usability: How easy is it for a user to navigate and interact with your site on a small screen?
It always helps to pay attention to what Google recommends. The more your site ticks boxes on their checklist, then the more they’ll take notice of you (which can’t hurt, right?!).
The rise of mobile device usage has happened really fast. Therefore, a lot of websites that were built in the last 3-5 years don’t accommodate for mobile versions – at the time of building this may not have been a priority or perhaps there wasn’t the budget for it.
In 2013-2014, every website that White Flag built is responsive. Just saying.
